The Big News has to wait while some details are worked out, but in the meantime I’ve been busy with my WIP. Writing it stalled at 20,000 words, as I am also writing a play for The Well, opening soon under the brilliant director Max Barton, and trying to get my brain back into poetry gear for my MA thesis deadline in September.
All this said, the Big News requires prose to be high on my to-do list, so I am joining the Ready. Set. WRITE! (RSW) challenge a few weeks late. I found out about it on Caroline Richmond’s excellent blog, which kept me sane during the finding-an-agent stage of my writing journey. Go read her ‘After the Call‘ series. It’s aces.
ANYWAY. Here are my first RSW entries. I will be updating every Friday until this thing is written. I’m skipping the first one (How I did on last week’s goals) as this is my first week:
1. My goal(s) for this week.
Reach 28,000 words (1,000 a day).
2. A favourite line from my story OR one word/phrase that sums up what I wrote/revised.
Nanay tells me about an island with black sands and white forests where giants live and shake the earth, and that is where the tsunamis start.
Storytelling is an essential part of The Cartographer’s Daughter, and in my WIP they have a less prominent but deeply personal importance. They are the connection between a mother and daughter, a way of making sense of an illogically cruel situation.
3. The biggest challenge I faced this week (ex. finding time to write).
Writing what I am meant to be writing i.e. the play and my MA work.
4. Something I love about my WiP
How strong the voice of the protagonist is. I love her, and I hope readers will too, when she is finished enough to meet them!
